| March 2008 - It was back in 1996 when we last saw boyne island this green, it was humid, it rained for nearly 4 weeks straight during april/may without letting up. We thought what a wet climate it is up here in the region. We had moved from Ballina in NSW so we were used to a different kind of wet.... usually associated with cold. You could nearly feel a monsoonal effect for the rest of the year, with nice afternoon showers to cool & refresh.
Awoonga Dam even overflowed the wall that year and flushed the boyne river to a muddy mess with some low lying areas around town being flooded
But that was it, for the next 10 years it has been just HOT & STICKY, all our ferns & water dependent plants died off, the grass virtually remained brown all year unless you piped 100 of litres of water a week into the ground. And so the winters here were very very short, seemed like only a few short weeks of the cool relief and then smack the heat was back upon us, UNTIL 2007 began, I could feel the change in the air, winter came early and the coolness lasted for months, can anyone remember just how long our summers were! Now it's all changed, the water is back the air is different, the heat is less constant with the breaking of rainfall....is it global warming, I don't know, but it's NICE to have it back again and I do predict that we get used to the water now as I believe the cycle is full circle... rain rain & more rain on the way! |
